Metricon Stadium undergoes Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games transformation

Metricon Stadium undergoes Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games transformation
December 4, 2017

Carrara’s Metricon Stadium, the home of the Gold Coast Suns, is currently undergoing a transformation to become the athletics venue and centrepiece for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Commencing in September after the Suns’ season ended and set to continue through until early next year, the Commonwealth Games overlay includes the installation of an IAAF certified track as well as extra seating and grandstands surrounding the venue’s scoreboard.

Work at the Carrara Sports Precinct, being undertaken by contractor Cockram Constructions, also includes a second IAAF certified track within the precinct on which athletes will warm up.

Commenting on the works, Queensland Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones advised “this is an exciting time in the Games journey with this key venue evolving from an AFL field to a spectacular stadium where the eyes of the world will be focused for the Opening Ceremony on 4th April 2018.”

With its capacity expanded to 35,000, the venue ground will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events for seven days during the Games.

It will be restored to its AFL-ready appearance following next April’s Games, during which the Suns will play home games at the Gabba and Perth’s new Optus Stadium. The Suns first 2018 AFL Premiership game at Metricon Stadium will not be until 2nd June.

Games organisers have also begun overlay works at Southport’s Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, which will host the event’s swimming and diving competitions.
