McNamee to Head Tennis Australia?
Paul McNamee has been nominated by Tennis West to take over from long-time Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard.
Tennis West President Dean Williams said McNamee's "charisma, personality, enthusiasm and knowledge" made the co-founder of the Hopman Cup an ideal candidate to succeed Pollard, who had been in the role since 1989.
"The Tennis West board have nominated Paul for his dedication to WA tennis and the Hopman Cup in particular," Williams explained, adding "we've adopted him as a West Australian because of nearly 22 years of Hopman Cup involvement."
Williams praised Pollard's achievements but said he believed it was time for a change, stating "I think Geoff Pollard has done a wonderful job and a lot of good things for the sport."
A winner of two Wimbledon doubles titles and a former world No. 24 in singles, McNamee has been involved in top-level administration with tennis, golf and AFL.
He resigned as Chief Executive of the Australian Open in 2006 before taking on a role with Golf Australia, where he oversaw the resurgence of the Australian Opens - particularly the women's event.
McNamee, 54, served as Chief Executive of AFL club Melbourne between April and July last year before there was a change of the guard under then President Jim Stynes.
