Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre benefits from onsite liquid chlorine generation system

Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre benefits from onsite liquid chlorine generation system
December 7, 2016

The recently reopened Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre in Sydney is benefitting from an advanced on-site bulk liquid chlorine generator, the Wallace & Tiernan OSEC®-NXT, installed to handle water disinfection.

Using membrane electrolyser technology, the unit can produce up to 60 kilograms of neat available chlorine per day, which Wallace & Tiernan aquatic market distributor Tim Batt says is “more than enough for most aquatic centres.”

The OSEC®-NXT membrane type electrolysis system offers swimming pool operators a safe, reliable and economically efficient alternative to chlorine production as it produces sodium hypochlorite directly on site through the electrolysis of brine. As a result, it removes the need for swimming pool operators having to store chlorine gas and handle hazardous chemicals. The OSEC-NXT system produces hypochlorite at three times the strength of typical on-site systems, while still maintaining benefits of the low concentration such as greater stability and safety than commercial hypochlorite.

As Batt explains “(the system) automatically produces liquid chlorine at a consistent 2.5% strength into a bulk tank which is dosed to one or more pools as required.”

Batt adds that the technology has the lowest salt and energy consumption of any system, meaning less salt in the water with water quality equivalent to a chlorine gas pool, commenting “lower chloride levels in the pool also mean less corrosion risk.

“Cooling water can go into the balance tank, saving on heating energy costs (while) salt tablets are used in preference to granular salt and all salt is used up in the process, so there are no waste products.”

The system also features fully automatic operation, controlled by tank level sensors and a touch screen user interface to keep it simple, as well as communications for remote diagnostics.

Similar technology was also installed in the aquatic training facility at the Australian Army’s newly consolidated and upgraded Holsworthy Barracks in Western Sydney which feature a 4 megalitre indoor training pool for the commando units.

The Wallace & OSEC®-NXT on-site bulk liquid chlorine generation system offers the following key features:

• World’s most advanced membrane type, on-site chlorine generator (OSEC-NXT uses fourth generation membrane electrolyser technology from Wallace & Tiernan, Germany)
• Lowest salt consumption of any unit (1.7kg salt per 1kg neat Available Chlorine produced) – the closest competing system uses 30% more salt
• Low electrical consumption of 4.5kWH per 1kg neat Available Chlorine produced
• Constant & consistent 2.5% strength hypochlorite solution produced (strongest & most consistent of any system) giving maximum storage life and consistent dosing accuracy
• High solution strength and low salt consumption mean that minimal salt is dosed into the pool, giving the equivalent water quality of a chlorine gas pool. Chlorides are reduced so that the risk of stainless steel corrosion to pool plant is minimised
• ‘OSEC-Salin’ or equivalent salt tablets are easier and more pleasant to handle than granular salt and pricing is similar for the locally supplied version (approx $950 +GST per tonne)
• All salt is used up during the process, so there are no waste products
• Cooling water can be used as already warmed pool makeup water into the balance tank(s), saving on energy, heating costs and water for the Aquatic Centre
• Simple to use automatic dilution make-up system for emergency dosing of liquid chlorine from delivery drum, at similar strength to pool via system dosing pumps
• Service support is provided by German factory trained Evoqua/Wallace & Tiernan Australia technicians, based in Windsor, NSW.
