Major investment announced for Gippsland’s sporting infrastructure

Major investment announced for Gippsland’s sporting infrastructure
March 19, 2024

The Victorian Government has announced a significant investment in Gippsland’s sporting infrastructure as part of the state government's $2 billion Regional Sports Infrastructure Program following the cancellation of the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The investment is anticipated to deliver huge upgrades to four popular facilities in the area.

Victorian Minister for Sport Steve Dimopoulos today visited Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium in Traralgon to announce the Gippsland Sports Package, which is delivering four projects across the region.

Minister Dimopoulos noted “We’re helping bring more grassroots and elite sporting competitions to Gippsland, increasing demand for accommodation and hospitality while giving a boost to local businesses.”

Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium is one of 15 world-class sporting facilities across the state to see major upgrades to the venue, including upgrades to four playing courts and new lighting and technology for broadcasting.

More players will benefit from upgrades to change rooms and toilets while new solar panels and skylights will ensure this project provides players have the facilities they need to succeed for generations to come.

From elite soccer to live music, the Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park is a major sport and entertainment hub for the region – used by Melbourne Victory and for wrestling tournaments, concerts, expos and more.

A major upgrade will deliver a new pavilion and upgraded pitches complete with lighting and increased visitor capacity, boosting local jobs and businesses and the region’s economy as thousands of visitors flock to Gippsland to see their favourite sport and entertainment stars.

The Gippsland Sports Package is also delivering two more sports venue upgrades in Gippsland – including the Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe, which will benefit from a refurbished oval, lighting, amenities, and terraces while the Morwell Gun Club will also be boosted by a new shotgun trap shooting range and safety upgrades.

These projects will help increase sports participation among the Gippsland community and bring more elite sport to regional Victoria, supporting local businesses.

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement of a commitment to upgrade key sporting infrastructure in Latrobe as part of the state government's $2 billion regional package following the cancellation of the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.

This upgrade includes sporting infrastructure at Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe, Gippsland Regional Sport and Entertainment Park in Morwell, the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium in Traralgon, and the Morwell Gun Club.

Mayor of Latrobe City Darren Howe said these enhancements will help expand the event calendar, attract national competitions, and increase community sports participation, fostering pathways from local clubs through to the elite level.

Mayor Howe notes "we have a longstanding history of collaboration with the Victorian Government and welcome the promise of infrastructure improvement, which will bring substantial economic benefits for local businesses and tourism, and importantly, a sense of community pride.

"We are committed to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives for the community's benefit.

"To support this, Council has endorsed the formation of Project Reference Groups comprising councillors, local club, and sporting associations to oversee these projects. These groups will ensure stakeholder engagement. Council is also collaborating with sports partners to develop activation plans for each venue, maximising their potential to host major events upon completion."

Council will continue to work with Government to ensure that this commitment to regional development is delivered, and that the best outcomes are afforded to our community.
