The WetSide aquatic play park at Hervey Bay - newly reopened after upgrades were carried out during the winter months - is now the site of the largest Life Floor installation in the Southern Hemisphere.

Covering an area of just over 1,300 square metres, the Life Floor installation covered not only the WetSide playspace but also the adjacent Totside amenities.

A bold and elegant design on the WetSide area features large custom whales and sandbars, as well as Lifer Floor’s standard Marine Inlays. A swathe of curves weaves down the centre of the splash pad to encourage movement around the space and provide visual interest. The custom elements are complemented by a standard three-colour square pattern for cost-effectiveness and aesthetic.

Prior to Life Floor, the surface was coated with a pour-in-place system of rubber granules that failed despite the manufacturer’s installer returning for regular repairs.

As a result, the Fraser Coast Regional Council elected to replace everything with Life Floor in a phased project approach over the course of two years.

Speaking about the upgraded area, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said council staff and contractors had worked hard during the winter shutdown to ensure WetSide was ready for the warmer months, telling The Courier Mail that “WetSide is the perfect spot to beat the heat and have fun with something for everyone including water slides, a water play arena, TotSide for under 5s play and the Aqua Ninja course.”

Explaining how the new electrical work also enhanced the safety and reliability of the facility, Mayor Seymour noted “there has been a wave of works carried out over winter, particularly at TotSide.

“There is a new water horse feature called Seabiscuit, the existing sea creatures and clam have been refurbished, interactive water features have been reinstated, and damaged decking has been replaced.

“The flooring at both Totside and the main area has been upgraded, the water slides have been polished, new tables and chairs have been installed and the damaged boardwalk at the back of WetSide has been removed.”

WetSide will mark 15 years of operations in December.
