Kangaroo Island a ‘national landscape’

Kangaroo Island has been declared part of Tourism Australia's prestigious National Landscapes program.
The announcement at the recent Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) cements Kangaroo Islandâs status as a must-see destination for international tourists.
South Australian Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says the accolade reinforces Kangaroo Islandâs status as one of the best places in Australia for tourists to get close to nature.
Dr Lomax-Smith explained "National Landscapes identifies areas with outstanding natural and cultural experiences that are distinctive to Australia and sought after by a global audience made up of Tourism Australiaâs international target market.
"The amazing landscapes of Kangaroo Island showcase the best of the authentic Australian bush and wildlife, making it a natural selection for the National Landscapes initiative.
"This is the latest in a stream of recent accolades for Kangaroo Island and recognises this paradise for nature lovers as an international tourism drawcard.
"More and more, tourists are looking for clean, green and environmentally responsible travel experiences, and Kangaroo Island delivers in spades.
"The pristine island has abundant native wildlife and spectacular natural landscapes â in fact, more than one-third of the island is set aside for national and conservation parks.
"Kangaroo Island is increasing its focus on eco-attractions and accommodation in recognition of these environmentally-aware travellers â as well as the future preservation of the island.
"South Australia is already a leader in sustainable tourism development. Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island is a shining example of how nature and development can exist in harmony.
"As outlined in the South Australian Tourism Plan 2009-2014, we will continue to support a sustainable tourism industry in the future, which will help us achieve our goal of achieving $6.3 billion in visitor expenditure by 2014."
