read moreA public memorial service for All Black great Jonah Lomu is to be held in Auckland's Eden Park tomorrow (Monday 30th November).
Lomu, 40, died earlier this his home in the city. Capped 63 times by his country, he was diagnosed with a rare kidney condition in 1995.
Writing on his official website, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key stated "Jonah touched people's lives across the country and around the world."
Prime Minister Key added "this service will be open to all members of the public who want to remember the significant contribution Jonah made, not only to rugby here and overseas, but also to the wider community through his work with charities such as Unicef and Kidney Kids NZ."
His father-in-law, Mervyn Quirk, paid tribute to Lomu, who was widely regarded as one of the best rugby players of all time.
He stated "his heart was so big that he reached out to so many, even at times where he wasn't well."
Auckland Council and the New Zealand Rugby Union have said they have been working with Lomu's family on an appropriate memorial.
