read moreInternational Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has announced that he will step down next year after 12 years in the role.
Announcing his decision after the conclusion of the Paris Games, Bach advised “as a result of deep deliberations and extensive discussions, also with my family, I have come to the conclusion that I should not have my mandate extended beyond the term limit stipulated by the Olympic Charter.
“I was one of the promoters and authors of such a term limit at the time of the revision of the Olympic Charter. Until today I strongly believe that after 12 years in the office as IOC President, our organization is best served with a change in the leadership.
“New times are calling for new leaders. I know that with this decision I am disappointing many of you. I can only plea to you to respect that I am convinced this to be in the best interest of our beloved Olympic movement.”
With the election of Bach’s successor expected to take place in March next year, reports indicate World Athletics President Sebastian Coe is interested in taking over the role.
Coe told media “I have always made it clear that if the opportunity arose, then I would obviously give it serious thought.
“The opportunity has arisen and clearly I need to think about it. I would consider it.
“I have chaired an Olympic Games from bid to delivery and two years of legacy after that. I have been privileged to compete in two Olympic Games.
“I have chaired a national Olympic committee, and I now have the best job in the world as president of the number-one Olympic sport.
“These are experiences that if you put together, as well as other aspects of my life, I think would be beneficial to the role.”
