Indigenous ranger taken in Northern Territory
An Aboriginal ranger has been taken by a crocodile in a remote area of Arnhem Land according to Northern Territory WorkSafe officials.
The female was reported missing yesterday in the wilderness area, with Northern Territory Police reportedly now travelling to the scene.
Northern Territory WorkSafe said the attack happened near the community of Gan Gan, at least 500 kilometres east of Darwin.
A statement from the safety body advised "NT WorkSafe has commenced an investigation into the incident.”
The ABC reported that the woman is believed to be part of the Yirralka Rangers program.
The program employs about 50 people to care for a large section of traditional land belonging to the Yolngu people, Yirralka Rangers says on its website.
According to research published last year, crocodile attacks claimed 14 lives in the Northern Territory between 2005 and 2014.
