Hotel Waterparks Expand Across Asia

Hotel Waterparks Expand Across Asia
August 25, 2010

A wave of hotel waterparks are opening across Asia.

Consultant Jeff Coy, President of Phoenix, Arizona-based JLC Hospitality Consulting, Inc., has been charting the development of hotel waterparks around the world, maintaining a database of hotel waterparks that have opened, are under construction or are in the planning stage.

As Coy explains "there are many waterparks, amusement parks and theme parks worldwide, but it is a recent phenomenon to build an on-site hotel that connects with the park.

"Indoor and outdoor park owners have discovered that having a hotel on site provides families with accommodations for a longer length of stay and a larger total spend."

The new projects opening are designed as mixed-use resort destinations that include hotels, conference centres, recreation, entertainment, shopping and residential components. The components cluster together to attract families while the increased entertainment value results in higher revenues captured by the overall resort, which, Coy states "explains why existing parks and resorts keep getting bigger and bigger."

In a feature in the latest issue of Australasian Leisure Management, Coy is interviewed on the development of the hotel waterpark concept.

The feature also outlines some of Asia's recent hotel waterpark and resort developments, with the last few years having witnessed a slowdown in hotel waterpark development in North America.

With a shift in hotel waterpark development to the Middle East and Asia Pacific, the region has further developed the hotel waterpark concept, with some projects featuring as part of massive mixed-use resort destinations combining waterparks and hotels with conference centres; sport and entertainment venues; shopping malls; and residential developments.
