Hollywood costume designer’s work to be exhibited at Bendigo Art Gallery
The works of Edith Head, considered to have been the most significant costume designer in film history, are to go on display at the Bendigo Art Gallery from 29th September 2017 to 21st January 2018.
Synonymous with Hollywood costume during the twentieth century, Head’s 50-year career in studio costume - first at Paramount Pictures and later at Universal Studios saw her work closely with many of Hollywood’s brightest stars on close to a thousand films.
The Costume Designer: Edith Head and Hollywood, will bring together more than 70 costumes designed by Head from the 1930s to the 1960s and taken from the archives of Paramount as well as from the Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design and other private collections.
The works range from beautifully tailored suits and simple day dresses, to glamourous evening gowns, period dresses and performance costumes.
The staging of this exhibition is seen as a coup for the Bendigo Art Gallery, with the city also ready for the return of The Ballarat International Foto Biennale from 19th August to 17th September.
This month-long celebration of international and Australian photography will this year feature American photographer David LaChapelle - considered one of the most important photographers of our time.
The Costume Designer brings together more than seventy costumes designed by Head from the 1930s to the 1960s and taken from the archives of Paramount as well as from the Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design and other private collections. Edith Head’s virtuosity as a designer is undeniable - from beautifully tailored suits and simple day dresses, to glamourous evening gowns, period dresses and performance costumes.
Films highlighted in the exhibition include: The Ten Commandments, Samson and Delilah, The Emperor’s Waltz, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo, The Heiress and many more. The exhibition features costumes worn by Shirley Temple, Gloria Swanson, Veronica Lake, Olivia De Havilland, Dorothy Lamour, Jane Russell, Hedy Lamarr, Anne Baxter, Fred Astaire and Yul Brynner, costumes rarely seen outside the US or on public display.
A designer whose greatest skill was her capacity to recognise apparent ‘flaws’ in the bodies she dressed, using drape, cut and pattern to disguise these imperfections and to highlight the wearer’s ‘assets’, Head’s work received eight Academy Awards during her career, the largest number ever by a woman.
Despite her recognition as Hollywood’s most significant designer, Edith Head’s opulent and glamourous gowns did not form part of her own wardrobe – instead she wore understated clothing, making use of only four colours: black, white, beige and brown. Her aim was to ensure that when dressing the stars she would simply fade into the background to enable the star to shine.
