Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre secures Royal Life Saving facility safety award
For operating “an inclusive approach to harnessing a safety culture, and generating a holistic health hub for their community", the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre has been awarded ‘Excellence in Aquatic Safety - By an Aquatic Facility (Large)’ as part of the National Aquatic Industry Safety Awards.
Royal Life Saving Society - Australia presented for the first time this year are an initiative of the Society’s Aquatic Industry Safety Committee to acknowledge the achievements of aquatic facilities and individuals towards improving health and safety outcomes within their communities.
The Award recognises how, since re-opening in 2014, Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre (HALC) has developed an in-house health and safety committee. There is a nominated volunteer from each department who is allocated specific responsibilities to help drive and promote our strong health and safety culture.
The Award citation explains “customer feedback is an important element of the facilities operations. Feedback is encouraged throughout the facility with multiple touchpoints available. Feedback provided is displayed on screens throughout the centre with a response from the management team to show their action.
“The facility offers a central location for their member’s needs. In addition to their aquatic and fitness programs, providing childcare, a health clinic, and nutritious traffic light rating café.
“Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre has recently received The Platinum Pool safety recognition. As part of the Platinum Pool program, the Centre under took a thorough safety audit through Life Saving Victoria which required an in depth assessment of the Centre. HALC was proud to achieve a 100% score.
Fellow Victorian aquatic facility, AquaPulse were awarded Best Solution to an Identified Aquatic Health and Safety Issue.
Research conducted by Royal Life Saving reveals that there have been more than 356 drowning incidents in Australian aquatic facilities between 2002/2003 and 2014/2015. The drowning incidents include 50 fatal and 316 non-fatal.
Craig Roberts, Royal Life Saving’s National Manager Aquatic Industry explains “the awards were established to recognise the people within the industry who dedicate their time to making the lives of millions of Australians safer.”
“By celebrating the excellent work being done by individuals and organisations, our goal is to motivate people within the industry to increase the level of safety for their community, cultivating an environment where health and safety initiatives are continually being reviewed and developed.”
