Gymnastics welcomes recognition as top 10 participation sport for children
Gymnastics Australia has welcomed the recent study from Roy Morgan Research that shows gymnastics is one of the top 10 most participated sports in Australia among children aged six to 13 years.
A statement from Gymnastics Australia explained that following the “release of research from Victoria University calling for gymnastics to become an integral part of the physical education curriculum in primary schools, due to its superior ability to develop and enhance children’s fundamental movement skills, gymnastics has put another win on the board according to research released today by Roy Morgan.
“Not only is gymnastics essential in developing children’s fundamental movement skills, which are translatable to a wide range of sports and other physical activities.”
The Roy Morgan Research figures shows that 444,000 (18%) boys and girls aged between six and 13 currently participating in a gymsport.

The Gymnastics Australia statement added “even for older Australian children, aged 14 years and older, gymnastics ranks 16th on the overall list of sports regularly participated in, with 125,000 older Australian children regularly participating in gymnastics.
“In total, 569,000 children aged six and above regularly partaking in some form of gymnastics overall, making it the 13th most popular sport amongst Australian children.
“And for children who are not currently participating in gymnastics, the good news is it’s never too late! “Research has shown that for children who participate in some of Australia’s most popular sports, such as soccer, athletics and netball, participating in one gymnastics session a week will not only vastly improve their fundamental movement skills, but also their object control and stability skills, which are transferrable to all sports and physical activities.”
