Gold Coast reaps benefits from world’s largest biennial masters games

Gold Coast reaps benefits from world’s largest biennial masters games
January 11, 2015

Close to $20 million was injected into Queensland’s economy thanks to the record-breaking 2014 Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games.

A recent Tourism Analysis Report estimated that the 9th biennial Pan Pacific Masters Games, held from 1st to 9th November last year, generated $19.06 million for Queensland’s economy, an increase of 14% on the 2012 edition of the Games.

In addition, close to two-thirds of all competitors and their supporters travelled from outside of Queensland (both from the rest of Australia and overseas) amassing 87,957 room nights.

Overall, more than 30,000 people visited the Gold Coast during the event.

Events Management Queensland Chairman Kerry Watson said the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games also proved its value to the local and state tourism interests in driving positive views and return visits to the Gold Coast.

Watson stated “65% of respondents to the 2014 participant survey agreed with the position, ‘Based on my event experience in 2014, I am inclined to visit the Gold Coast for leisure or a holiday in the next three years’.

“Further, 87% agreed ‘This event makes a positive contribution to the image, appearance and reputation of the Gold Coast’, 87% agreed ‘This event is important for the local community’ and 91% agreed ‘I am likely to return for future events’.”

Events Management Queensland Chief Executive Cameron Hart said once again the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games has delivered a world-class event that the Gold Coast and its residents can be extremely proud of.

Hart stated “the city has definitely benefitted from the event’s international and interstate pulling power with reports of accommodation at capacity, restaurants booked out and crowds of participants enjoying the coast’s nightlife during the entire week.

“It was also fantastic to see the Gold Coast’s exceptional sporting venues packed full of competitors and their supporters including the redeveloped Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.”

The 10th biennial Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games will be held in 2016.

Dates of the event are yet to be announced.
