Global fitness club income reaches US$84 billion
Fitness clubs worldwide achieved total revenue of more than US$84 billion in 2014, as established markets continued to perform and emerging regions saw growth, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).
The 2015 IHRSA Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry examines the performance of health clubs in nearly 70 markets worldwide, covering
180,000 clubs and 144.7 million members. It shows that the US, Germany and the UK remain the largest markets in terms of members, with fast rising Brazil occupying fourth spot.
Fitness club performance is also robust in the Asia-Pacific with 13 markets in the region attracting 17 million members.
The report also shows room for growth in the region as the average member penetration rate in the Asia-Pacific is just 3.8%. Larger cities in Asia, including Beijing and Shanghai in China; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Jakarta, Indonesia are home to maturing industries, while future growth is anticipated in growing cities across the continent.
Commenting on the report, Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's Executive Vice President of Global Products, stated “the IHRSA Global Report offers the most comprehensive overview of health club markets worldwide, providing topline statistics on nearly 70 markets,”
“Leading markets continue to post strong performance indicators, while emerging markets are poised for growth.”
