Glenorchy community and sports hub moves forward

Glenorchy community and sports hub moves forward
May 22, 2012

The development of the King George V (KGV) sports and community precinct in Glenorchy, Tasmania is moving ahead following Federal Regional Australia Minister Simon Crean's announcement of $8.7 million in funding to support the plan.

Planning of the precinct, which has involved the Glenorchy City Council and the Glenorchy Football Club, has been under way for years, with hopes the precinct will expand into a $35 million development over five to 10 years.

The funding, which has been made available this financial year, is for a precinct that will incorporate sports clubs, community groups and health services delivering benefits to the local Glenorchy and wider Hobart communities.

Glenorchy Mayor Stuart Slade recently explained that the KGV precinct is a key project for the council, stating "the redevelopment will see a state-of-the-art sports and community precinct which has facilities to benefit both the sporting community and broader community delivering sport, social, health and educational outcomes."

The Federal Government also funded a $120,000 business plan for the site, presented to Prime Miniser Julia Gillard in October last year.

The redevelopment includes:

• Health and wellness centre
• Sports house
• Upgrades to the Glenorchy Football Club facilities
• Theatrette, meeting room and training room
• Function rooms, including bar and bistro
• Cafe and commercial kitchen
• Changing rooms
• Kiosk and public amenities
• Transport museum shed
• Re-furbished cricket training nets.
• Multi-purpose synthetic spots pitch
• New pedestrian entrance and landscaping.
