Genesis Fitness Cessnock tackles obesity on the front line
Armed with a motivation to make a difference and the will to act Katie Ryan, Fitness Manger at the Genesis Fitness club in Cessnock, NSW is taking action to inspire her local community to combat the obesity levels in their town.
While Cessnock has the sixth highest obesity rate in Australia, at 23.86% of community members, the town now has a team of local champions who are inspired to help the members of the community become healthier by simply adding movement to their lives.
Ryan has challenged her fellow community to 'move' out of the top 10 and is leading by example, inviting community members to join her tomorrow (Thursday 19th March) as she participates in the Genesis Fitness Treadmill Challenge.
Ryan's challenge will be a 12 hour walk/run starting at 8am and finishing at 8pm.
Ryan's mission, along with the entire club, is to inspire as many club members and members of the Cessnock community to join her to help reduce obesity in Cessnock by the end of the year.
Explaining her motivation, which she hopes will inspire others, Day states “I myself have struggled, having being overweight and suffering from depression and anxiety.
"Within 12 months I had lost 18 kilograms and began my studies to become a personal trainer.
"From that moment on I decided to dedicate my life to help, educate and encourage others to change their life”.
Genesis Fitness Cessnock owner John Pirlo explains “we are so proud of Katie for taking the action to encourage her fellow Australians to get moving and make a change in their lifestyle.
"It’s (also) going to be a great addition to our Treadmill Challenge total … the club will be hard to beat."
Cessnock currently leads the Genesis Treadmill challenge where Genesis Clubs around Australia are attempting to combine the total kilometres run by their members to run the distance around Australian – 14,850 kilometres. The club currently sits on 907 kilometres and will add some big numbers to the total on Thursday.
Genesis Fitness Clubs National Sales Marketing Manager David Galbally has congratulated Ryan for her initiative and is encouraging the town to get behind her.
Galbally adds “we are so excited to see Katie embark on this challenge. We strive to inspire healthier communities with everything we do at Genesis.
"We hold these types of events regularly as a fun and social way to encourage Australians to get moving.
"We applaud Katie and the Cessnock club for the initiative (and) we look forward to celebrating with Cessnock when they drop from the top 10 in the coming months.”

Striving to inspire healthier communities, Genesis Fitness is one of Australia’s largest full service fitness clubs and currently has 53 clubs around Australia.
Most of its facilities are managed by owner operators living in the local community.
