Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre team win leadership award

Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre team win leadership award
April 26, 2016

The cross-council collaboration by the City of Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council in the development of the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre has been recognised by the Local Government Professionals Australia, South Australia Leadership Excellence Awards Program.

Presented with the Community Partnerships and Collaboration award at the 15th edition of the program, the work undertaken by the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre team in delivering the facility, after decades of sustained demand, was reognised as "outstanding" by the Award judges.

Set to open in April next year, the new facility will provide aquatic, recreation, sport and wellness facilities for an expected 100,000 annual users in the growing communities around Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Middleton and Goolwa.

The award judges explained that "creating this major new infrastructure was only possible with the commitment and dedication of the two councils to harness timing and opportunity, securing two major Federal and State Government grants to support the project as well as a land donation from a local private landholder.

"The cross-collaboration teamwork between the two councils enabled the project to proceed from concept to construction in a relatively short period of time for a project of this magnitude."

Welcoming receipt of the award, City of Victor Harbor Chief Executive Graeme Maxwell and Alexandrina Council Chief Executive Peter Dinning said they were thrilled to receive the accolade.

The Chief Executives issued a joint statement explain “after 30 years of community expectation, the Fleurieu region south coast community will have a regional aquatic facility due to outstanding collaboration of our councils. It is fantastic that this has been recognised by our peers at a State level.

“Our councils are extremely proud to have brought the Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project to fruition to provide huge benefits to our communities.

“It is not common for councils to build major infrastructure together but this project has shown it is possible.

“The significant expense to construct new facilities is cost prohibitive for many councils, particularly smaller and regional councils. The Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre Project demonstrates that councils can consider their communities’ needs at a regional level – and we know there have been a number of councils looking to our project as a template for delivering joint infrastructure.”

When complete, the centre will offer an eight lane 25 metre indoor swimming pool, rehabilitation pool, program pool and outdoor splash park; and social infrastructure – a crèche, commercial kiosk and importantly, a 300 metre² room, suitable for multi-use and events.

The Local Government Professionals Australia, South Australia Leadership Excellence Awards Program recognises outstanding achievement and innovation in local government.
