Finalists showcase the best in Western Australian sport and recreation

Finalists showcase the best in Western Australian sport and recreation
June 20, 2014

From innovative swimming programs in remote Aboriginal communities to surfing Margaret River with the world’s best, the finalists for the 2014 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards have been announced.

Selected from more than 80 applications, the nominations showcase best practice and an exciting, diverse range of projects across WA’s thriving sport and recreation sector.

Introducing the awards, Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation (DSRWA) Director General Ron Alexander stated “I am thrilled with the calibre of nominations for the awards.

“These awards highlight the exciting work happening across all levels of our industry - from international events to grassroots participation programs.“For example, Royal Life Saving’s innovative Go for 2 & 5 Swim for Fruit program is succeeding in encouraging children in remote communities to swim laps of their local pool, while learning about healthy eating.”

Finalists include the First National Kimberley Lake Argyle Swim, the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series, Football West’s National Premier League and the Shire of Plantagenet Sounness Park Community Recreation Development.

Across eight categories, the finalists are also vying for the overall Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence with prize money of $10,000.

Alexander added "the finalists for these awards are all contributing to stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities in which everyone wins.

The awards are supported by DSRWA, Western Australia Sports Federation, Parks and Leisure Australia (WA), Outdoors WA, LIWA Aquatics and Fitness Australia.

Held every two years, the awards recognise innovation and exceptional achievement across all areas of sport and recreation in Western Australia.

Winners will be announced at the Sport and Recreation Industry Awards Presentation Breakfast on 30th July.
