Expert Advisory Board appointed to develop Arafura Games

Expert Advisory Board appointed to develop Arafura Games
April 24, 2018

Planning for the 2019 Arafura Games continues to gather pace with the appointment of a high-level Advisory Committee to oversee the management of the popular sporting event.

Northern Territory Minister for the Arafura Games, Ken Vowles, said the Games are a partnership event that involves multiple countries, sectors and jurisdictions, and the 13-member Committee reflects that.

Minister Vowles advised “the Arafura Games aren’t just about sport - they are about building business relationships and celebrating the arts, culture and what the Territory has to offer tourists.

“It is important the Advisory Committee reflects all those aspects, so we have appointed representatives from a number of sectors including sports, the arts, international relations, government, education, tourism, marketing and events.”

Committee members have been appointed for 12 months on a voluntary basis. Their role will be to maintain a watching brief on progress of Games preparations, and they will receive regular detailed progress reports. They will also endorse Games documentation and plans.

The Committee members are:

• Kate Worden, Assistant Minister for Bringing Back the Arafura Games
• Andrew Hopper (Chair), Deputy Chief Executive, DTC
• Tim Watsford, General Manager, Northern Territory Major Events Company
• Mark Hunt, Landbridge (business)
• Trevor Cox, General Manager, Tourism Top End (tourism)
• Louise Partos, Artback NT (arts and culture)
• Stacey Farraway, CDU Director International (education)
• Judith O'Hearn OAM, Paralympian (sport)
• Sean Mahoney, Chamber of Commerce (international relations)
• Jeannette Button, PR Button, (media/marketing/public relations)
• Matt Grassmayr, City of Darwin (local government)
• Mick Hannon, Bus Link (transport)
• Sam Burke, General Manager, Darwin Waterfront Corporation

The Arafura Games will take place from 27th April to 4th May 2019. Eight countries have so far officially signed up to compete, along with almost 200 volunteers.
