eGym, which offers software-based, intelligent training solutions to several thousand gyms in Europe, announced in January that the European Investment Bank would commit €25 million (US$30 million) to drive its research and development program.
In addition, eGym also offers trainer and fitness apps and also an open cloud platform called eGym ONE, which networks studio equipment from more than 50 industry suppliers, including Matrix, Precor, Polar and Runkeeper.
Netpulse, based in San Francisco, is a provider of white label mobile apps for fitness club and has a global list of clients, including Planet Fitness, Gold's Gym, 24 Hour Fitness, Virgin Active, UK-based DW Fitness First and, in Australia, Plus Fitness and Goodlife Health Clubs.
Commenting on the acquisition, eGym Chief Executive Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer explained “Netpulse impressed us in many ways: its deep footprint in the US market and its scalable, customisable IT-platform.”
Commenting on Netpulse’s 90% year on year growth over two consecutive years, Roesch-Schlanderer added “for both our companies, gathering meaningful fitness data for members is the most important aspect of our work.
“Valid training information is essential to sustained motivation for members and more profitable gyms.”
Under the acquisition, Netpulse Chief Executive John Ford, will become the new Chief Executive of eGym North America while Netpulse’s Chief Commercial Officer Alex Peacock, will become Netpulse Chief Executive. Netpulse Chairman and co-founder Tom Proulx will join the Board of Directors of eGym.
Commenting on the deal, Ford advised “Netpulse will continue in its mission to bring innovation to gyms with the renewed energy and resources of the combined company.
"We want our customers to benefit from a completely integrated system, without sacrificing their ability to buy different types of equipment. Once the entire training floor is digitised, the options to add value will be endless.”
A product integration plan will see eGym’s digital training tools, such as workout tracking, embedded inside Netpulse mobile apps, while eGym will continue to drive the expansion of Netpulse in Europe.
Looking forward, Ford added “this will be the combination of the largest supplier-independent digital fitness platform and the largest open mobile platform.
“All of eGym’s world class fitness experience will be built right into the Netpulse app, starting with eGym workout tracking. Netpulse will continue on its mission to bring innovation to gyms with the renewed energy and resources of the combined company.”
eGym and Netpulse have a joint exhibition stand at the current IHRSA Expo in San Diego, California, USA.
