Design plans progress for Darwin’s Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Design plans progress for Darwin’s Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre
April 29, 2021

Having taken on feedback received during the consultation process, City of Darwin has given approval for final detailed design plans to progress for the new $25 million Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

Council, in discussion with local architects Ashford Group Pty Ltd, has taken on board the community and stakeholder feedback received during the consultation of the concept design in 2020 with changes to the original master plan iincluding:

  • An expansion of the 50 metre pool design to incorporate eight lanes
  • Shade over all three areas of water
  • A basketball half-court and a large grassed area for informal ball games
  • Swimming clubhouse and office space moved closer to the 50 metre pool
  • Change rooms and amenities have been re-positioned to improve functionality and access across the site.

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that it is great to see the plans for the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre moving forward and noted “this is an important step in the process towards construction commencing towards the end of this year.

“We have taken on feedback that we received during the consultation process and have made some significant changes to what was initially proposed. The changes made will not affect the purpose of the development, which is to create a fun, versatile and relaxing space for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy.”

Council is looking to fund the project through grants and external borrowings, and will now prepare to go out to tender for detailed design over the next couple of months.
