Darwin sites transformed by Art to Street project

City of Darwin’s Art to Street project which will see the transformation of six sites across Darwin, is now underway with the painting of the first mural set to start this weekend, as part of the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival, 10th & 11th May.
The Nightcliff Seawall is the first site that will be transformed through murals. The $90,000 project has been jointly funded by the Federal Government under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).
The sites for the other five murals have been announced and include Walkway 81 in Wagaman, the retaining wall on Gardens Hill Crescent in the Gardens, both sides of the Mindil Beach Sound Shell, West Lane in the CBD and Casuarina Library.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis stated “the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival provides the perfect backdrop for us to commence this project. This well-loved community event has been showcasing visual arts, food, music and culture since 2004.
“The Art to Street project includes six artworks across six locations that once complete, will add vibrancy and colour to public spaces across Darwin.
“The project will also support local artists by providing opportunities for them to deliver art work across our city for the community to enjoy.”
The Art to Street project includes public art workshops and community events alongside the delivery of the murals.
Proper Creative, an organisation specialising in large scale murals and design consultation, will mentor six emerging artists through the process of developing and delivering commissioned art projects in these public spaces.
