Countdown to third Women’s Health and Fitness Summit

Countdown to third Women’s Health and Fitness Summit
September 6, 2016

The third annual Women’s Health and Fitness Summit is being held this weekend (10th and 11th September) at the RACV Club in Melbourne.

Summit organiser Mish Wright empathises that “there is a perception that the Women’s Health and Fitness Summit is for women only – but it’s not!”

However, Wright wants the event to highlight that women have different training needs to men and that specific training principles for women have largely been excluded from general fitness education.

Wright explains that there needs to be a cultural change in the fitness industry so trainers can stop the potential harming of female clients with exercise.

She explains “as most fitness professionals are men and statistically, most fitness industry clients are women ... all fitness professionals should attend the Summit ... including our male trainers.”

Wright launched the Summit in 2014 as a result of being “frustrated” at the lack of information given to fitness professionals about the different training needs for women.

She comments “women not only have a monthly hormone cycle that impacts of muscle function, but also larger hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy, postnatal and menopause.

“63% of a fitness professional’s average client base are females, yet few trainers and instructors are truly catering to their needs, instead opting to prescribe them a ‘standard’ program that was probably historically designed for men.

“When you overlay the large number of women experiencing incontinence and prolapse, then you can be sure that many, many women are either suffering in silence or finding it all to hard and become inactive.”

The Summit also includes at bonus training forum, ‘Pregnancy and Post-Natal Training for Personal Trainers, developed in collaboration with women’s health physiotherapists.

The Women’s Health and Fitness Summit delivers 7 CECs through Fitness Australia.
