Council commitment to Kalgoorlie FlowRider
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is set to unveil an Australian first, a council operated FlowRider.
In planning since 2003, the FlowRider is to be sited at the Goldfields Oasis Aquatic Centre, and is expected to be a major leisure attraction â allowing users to surf in the Goldfields, despite being 400 kilometres away from the sea.
Users are to be charged $4.50 for a 30-minute session on the FlowRider, which will also be hired out for exclusive after-hours access at a cost of $220 an hour.
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder also hopes to hold sponsored flowboarding competitions and hold night-time sessions on the FlowRider to attract young people.
The FlowRider is expected to incur operational losses of around $92,000 a year, costs that tourism and civic leaders defend, citing the social and economic benefits that the FlowRider will bring.
