Construction underway on Brisbane’s new southside theatre
Construction of a new multicultural performing arts centre, that will benefit the multicultural community in Brisbane’s southside, is underway.
Located at DM Henderson Park next to the Sunnybank Community Sports Club, the new theatre complex is due to be completed in 2016.
Speaking recently, Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the new centre will benefit Brisbane and South-East Queensland residents and visitors, explaining “the Multicultural Performing Arts Centre will include a theatre with a capacity for 300 people, rehearsal and studio spaces for community groups, a stand-alone kitchen and canteen as well as dining and entertainment facilities."
To develop the facility, Brisbane City Council is working in partnership with Sunnybank Community Sports Club to develop the combined facility, with each organisation contributing $5 million to the $10 million project.
Lord Mayor Quirk added “Brisbane is a diverse city and our knowledge of our residents tells us that more than 21% were born overseas.
“This is why we continue to invest in programs aimed at enhancing the city’s offerings to our multicultural communities.
“In 2014/15 we will invest $721,000 for multicultural and refugee initiatives, $1.8 million to facilitate the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and more than $409,000 for multicultural festivals.”
The Sunnybank Theatre Group is expected to be a major user of the new facility.
