City of Sydney launches new guide to inclusive sports
To celebrate the 2016 Rio Paralympics and launch the City of Sydney’s new inclusive sports and recreation directory, the City is hosting free sport and recreation activities for people with a disability.
The week long program will coincide with the start of the Paralympic Games (from 9th to 17th September) – and feature free activities such as inclusive tai chi, qi gong, tennis, yoga and activities for young children of all abilities.
The directory includes targeted and adapted programs for people with disability, and inclusive programs that everyone can take part in – long after the games are over.
City of Sydney Chief Executive Monica Barone said the City is committed to creating an environment that is inclusive for everyone and draws on an Inclusion (Disability) Action Plan to help guide its efforts.
Barone explained "sport and recreational activities play an important role in providing fantastic opportunities for people to connect and share experiences
“This directory will provide a central information point that will allow people with disabilities to choose activities and programs that best suit them.
“Along with improved wayfinding and braille systems, and more accessible outdoor spaces and community facilities, this project is one of many ways the City is providing greater social and economic opportunities for people with disability.”
Barone said in 2012 the City formed a panel of people with direct experience of disability issues to provide expert advice on improving inclusion across Sydney. The directory is a result of their input and advice.
To help people make their way around the city to participate in various activities, the City also recently developed a beta accessibility map that shows key access features in the city, including mobility parking spaces, accessible public toilets and potential barriers such as stairs and moderate to steep inclines.
