City of Melville launches ‘Fit for Life’ community physical activity program
The City of Melville has introduced ‘Fit for Life’, a new campaign developed to encourage older members of the local community to start being physical active, or to get back into being active.
With estimates, suggesting physical inactivity could be responsible for about half of the physical decline associates with old age, the campaign highlights that it is never too late to reap the health benefits of getting fit and that physical activity is easy to incorporate into people’s lives.
With over 65s representing Australia's fastest growing age group, in the City of Melville forecasts indicate a 25.4% increase in population of retirement age between 2016-2026 suggesting that, by 2026, 26% of the population will be aged over 60 years.
In addition falls were identified as being the top injury and safety issue within the City of Melville community and a number of strategies were developed to address this.
City of Melville staff are mindful that only about one in 10 Australians over the age of 50 exercises enough to gain any cardiovascular benefit. Medical professionals suggest that people over the age of 65, more than any other age group require fitness levels to help them maintain independence, recover from illness and reduce their high risk of disease.
With effective actions able to be taken to enable people to live longer, in good health, staying physically and mentally active and able to participate and enjoy life until they die at an advanced old age, the City of Melville’s Fit for Life campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of staying physically active and supports an active community
In a statement, the Council advise “healthy ageing benefits both individuals and the society. Individuals can expect two or three decades of life beyond the current retirement age, with more years in good health.
“The earlier positive lifestyle choices are made, the better the health outcomes, which can result in people remaining healthy and independent well into their eighties.”
Through free fitness classes, heavily subsidised gym memberships, publications and interactive web information, the Fit for Life campaign provides a range of free or low cost options for people to find a local activity they enjoy. An entertaining short video created for the campaign features local active seniors and provides the upbeat motivation tool to get people moving.
