City of Casey selected to host Special Olympics Victoria
Special Olympics Victoria has selected the City of Casey to host their 2020 summer and winter state games. The opening ceremonies for both games will be held at the Casey Stadium, with a torch run organised by local police and performers from withing the community.
This is the first time the games will be held in Casey but not the last, as the City of Casey and Special Olympics Victoria have signed a five-year deal to lock Casey as the key location for the Olympics in the years to come.
The summer games held on Saturday 4th April, and winter games held on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of July, will bring athletes from all over Victoria as well as some from New South Wales and Tasmania.
The sports will include swimming, netball, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis and soccer. These will be held at Casey Fields, Casey Stadium and Casey RACE, while satellite venues will be used for bowling and bocce.
Expected to attract 300 – 350 spectators, City of Casey Mayor Susan Serey is looking forward to the event as it provides a great opportunity to showcase Casey’s finest sporting facilities and tourist attractions.
Mayor Serey advised “we are very fortunate as a community to have such amazing sporting facilities and to host fantastic competitions such as these.
“It will be fantastic to see a diverse range of sports being played in our community, and I encourage all community members to come along and support the athletes.
Council is supporting the event by providing free access to Casey Fields and entertainment for the opening ceremony.
