CAS Shelves Industry Advocacy
The Confederation of Australia Sport (CAS) has stepped back from its role as an advocate and peak body for the Australian sports industry.
Facing declining membership over recent years and its major national sporting organisation (NSO) members preferring to discuss industry issues directly with Governments and be represented by the Confederation of Major Professional Sports (COMPS), CAS will continue as a sporting events organisation.
Initially organised to provide income for its advocacy role, CAS runs the Australian Sports Awards along with the Australian and Australasian Masters Games.
Established in 1976 as the national peak body for sport in Australia, and briefly known as Sport Industry Australia, CAS sought to advance the interests of the Australian sports community and to give the industry a united voice in discussions and negotiations with governments and key stakeholders.
The end of CAS as a sport industry peak body would appear to leave a gap for an organisation peak body representing the sports industry.
