Careers Training Centre (CTC) and Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort have launched a new Indigenous Engagement Program that aims to present opportunities for young Indigenous Australians to gain industry experience.

The program, run in conjunction with Department of Education and Training, Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnership, Skill360 Australia, Neato Employment Services and Douglas Shire Council, launched earlier this month.

The program offers the opportunity for Indigenous people living in the Far North Queensland region to gain skills, experience and knowledge to work at a five star level in the hospitality industry.

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort are offering six paid positions that will be accessible to participants at the completion of the program.

The program will be offered in multiple stages, beginning with a two-week program where a larger group of participants will take part in activities which will allow trainers to identify individual’s ability to work as a team, commitment to the program, reliability and presentation.

Applicants will then be shortlisted to a smaller group of twelve and will progress to the next stage of the program, incorporating hands on training at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort, offering mentoring and support, and focusing on practical work experience across a number of departments within the resort.

Careers Training Centre Trainer and Assessor Bronwen Gratton said the program was comprehensive and engaging and an ideal way for people to get a foot in the door of the hospitality industry.

Gratton stated “partnering with an established five star property such as Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort allows us to offer our participants the highest levels of training and hands-on practical experience.

“The program will also work on breaking down the barriers that may prevent participants from maintaining employment, focusing on healthy eating, budgeting, lifestyle choices and other personal barriers.”
