Cairns' Sugarworld waterpark, sited in the suburb of Edmonton, has reopened.

The park's slides were declared unsafe in April last year, prompting its closure and subsequent replacement as part of as part of a $5.5 million redevelopment.

Cairns regional councillor Nancy Lanskey says that the waterpark is expecting high demand over the school holidays, despite it being the wet season in North Queensland.

Councillor Lanskey "people get wet anyway when they slide and in fact when it's raining you're less likely to get sunburnt.

"So I don't think the rain will make that much difference.

"It will be, no doubt, a bit congested but the lessee is all ready. She's got these you-beaut coloured wrist bands for people and she's had all these test runs.

"A third of the patrons used to come from the northern beaches, because the northern beaches have stingers in summer.

"In Edmonton, there's not a lot of community infrastructure at all for young people, so when it was shut down quite suddenly there was quite a void."

Visitor numbers will be limited while a water playground feature remains under construction.
