Plans for Sugarworld include the addition of a 25 metre long pool and at least two new water slides, estimated to costing the council up to $3 million.
Commenting on the plans, Councillor Schilling explained that plans for sport and recreation precinct had been developed following extensive community engagement and other research activities.
In respect of Sugarworld, he told The Cairns Post “at the moment, the planning for this would be for the pool (and) the year after, we’ve budgeted to put money aside to actually build the pool.
“A lot of the infrastructure is already there – the pumps and everything, are big enough to power what we want to do.”
Councillor Schilling also said there were plans to add up to four new slides to the theme park.
More than 400 delegates are attending the three-day conference, hosted at the Cairns Convention Centre.
Being held at the Cairns Convention Centre from Monday 25th to Wednesday 27th August, the PLA National Conference is being attended by in excess of 300 predominantly local government representatives from across Australia and New Zealand.
