Many of Byron Shire’s beaches and reserves are dog-friendly and the availability of free dog poo bags in some of these areas is an incentive for people to do the right thing and clean up after their pets.
The new bags will be compostable which means they will be able to be put into a general waste bin or the organics bin and this is reducing single-use plastics in our community.
Council’s Resource Recovery Officer, Stephen Green advised :“It is important for people to put the bags in the bin and not throw it into bushland or leave it on the beach because even though the bags are compostable, they do not break down unless they are in the right conditions.
“On behalf of Council I would like to thank the team of volunteers from our Shire who, for 10 years, have been tirelessly restocking the dispensers as a community service.
“These people not only love their dogs but have a strong commitment to the environment and their dedication has given people the means to clean up after their pets and keep our beaches and parks clean.
Green added: “On behalf of the community, and all of our dogs, we say a huge thank you.”
