Busy Times for SGL Group

Busy Times for SGL Group
May 2, 2008

2008 has already been a busy year for leisure and tourism planners the SGL Group.

Its newly established office in Western Australian has already received four project commissions while across Australia all offices are busy with new initiatives including event and funding services. Significant projects include a feasibility study for a Victorian State Drag Racing Facility and working on major aquatic leisure facilities at the City of Sydney and Glen Eira, Banyule, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula and Wodonga. Added to this are the

National Ice Sports Centre project and a multi sport indoor stadia (both at Melbourne Docklands) along with multi sport indoor stadia for Yarra Ranges and Whitehorse Councils. Added to this are aquatic strategies at Maitland and support for facility improvements at the Gold Coast, Brimbank and Mill Park (Whittlesea).

SGL's new tourism division, being led from its NSW office, have also completed business opportunity study projects at Torquay Surfworld, Geelong Conference Centre and Geelong Mineral Springs Bath House. The Geelong Bath House work follows successful project commissions at geothermal facilities in New Zealand (including the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa and the Mount Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools, Tauranga) as well as more Australian commissions at Moree Artesian Baths, Hepburn Springs Bath House and wellness resort development for a number of retirement villages.

Across the Tasman, SGL is compiling a Greater Auckland Regional Sports Facility Strategy (a major future sports plan for the seven councils in the Auckland region to service 32% of the countries population) auspiced under the Auckland Regional Physical Activity & Sport Strategy (ARPASS).

SGL has been part of the successful consortium for the North Shore City Council Aquatic Centre Design (with Beca and Peddle Thorp) while also undertaking peer review project work on the Wellington Indoor Community Stadium and the Tauranga Indoor Sports and Exhibition Centre.

SGL Funding has also been active and is part of a commission to assist in developing, designing and funding a new major aquatic leisure centre in Timaru as well as finishing off and opening the Buller Sport and Leisure Centre in Westport. Set to open early in 2009 the Buller Centre is being built at a cost of NZ $15.5 million for a 10,000 district population.
