Building begins at new Perth Stadium

Building begins at new Perth Stadium
December 8, 2014

The first pile for the new 60,000 seat Perth Stadium has been driven into the Burswood Peninsula site and construction is now officially underway.

With the official start of the construction of the five-level, 42 metre-high venue beginning yesterday (Sunday 7th December) more than 5,700 workers will be involved in works on the site more than 2,000 piles will be driven about 35 metre into the ground to supporting the structure.

On hand at the start of the construction, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett stated “before the gates open for the start of the 2018 AFL season, local businesses of all sizes will have the opportunity to play a part in the delivery of this venue.”

In July this year, the Premier revealed the winning design and that Westadium would design, build, partially finance and maintain the stadium and sports precinct.

Over the subsequent five months, the Westadium design and construction contractor Brookfield Multiplex has been developing its design and preparing the site for the construction phase, setting up offices, installing temporary roads and mobilising machinery.

Tourism Council ofWestern Australia (TCWA) has applauded today’s start of construction on the new Perth Stadium highlighting that when completed the Stadium will attract international and interstate spectators to the State, bringing new tourism dollars and jobs to the state.

TCWA Chief Executive Evan Hall stated “the Stadium will be our State’s top tourism asset (and) the start of stadium build is a milestone in the development of the WA tourism industry”

“With more seats and more events, the Stadium will drive tourism dollars into WA”

“Stadium tourism will be crucial to bringing much needed jobs to WA as resource sector slows.

“New stadiums such as Adelaide Oval have attracted new crowds. Cities such as Melbourne have a competitive edge in tourism because of their Stadium capacity.

“The Stadium will be a huge tourism earner, but only if we have the big events scheduled from opening in 2018.

“Now that construction has started we must start planning events to fill the Stadium in 2018.

“More Stadium events, means more spectators, more tourism dollars and more jobs created in WA.
