Brisbane Live precinct backed in Queensland election

Brisbane Live precinct backed in Queensland election
November 14, 2017

AEG Ogden’s proposed $2 billion entertainment precinct Brisbane Live is gaining continued backing from both the LNP and Labor parties in the Queensland state election.

With the LNP a longstanding proponent of the development, Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Planning Jackie Trad has advised that Brisbane Live will now be planned and delivered under the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority in partnership with AEG Ogden Chairman and Chief Executive Harvey Lister.

Minister Trad, a member of the current Queensland Labour Government, advised yesterday that “the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s decision to fully fund the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project creates further momentum for Brisbane Live because the new underground Roma Street station will enable a whole of precinct redevelopment and revitalisation.”

Minister Trad added “we are committed to creating a world class city through visionary development and an integrated and modern public transport system.

“Brisbane Live is proposed for a location that is right in the heart of the current Roma Street precinct, which is an underutilised area in proximity to key destinations like Caxton Street, the Paddington Barracks and Suncorp Stadium.

“We have been working very closely with Harvey Lister to make sure we create the best entertainment and integrated transport precinct in Australia.

“As well as progressing Brisbane Live, we will be developing a masterplan for the whole area and seeking ideas from the community, businesses and developers to ensure we get the best outcome for the whole South East Queensland region.”

While some media outlets have interpreted Minister Trad’s announcement as applying to Brisbane Live, no statement on the funding of Brisbane Live was made.

The Brisbane Live plan aims to make use of previously unused space over Brisbane’s Roma Street rail station which links to two railway networks connected to much of Queensland.

The plan includes a $450 million 17,000-seat indoor arena, a 4,000-capacity live music venue, and a 15,000-capacity amphitheatre as well as multiplex cinemas, restaurants and bars.

Commenting on the backing, Lister advised “it’s very encouraging that the Government appears to have recognised the potential for Brisbane Live to be an activator that could eventually see the whole Roma Street precinct become an exciting part of the state’s capital city.

“The fact that Brisbane Live can activate the entire Roma Street precinct is only possible due to the government’s vision to deliver the much needed Cross River Rail project.

“As a proud Queensland company and as part of the world’s leading entertainment, sport and venue management organisation, AEG, we look forward to bringing our global expertise to the table to make Brisbane Live and Cross River Rail happen in partnership.”

High profile populist politician Pauline Hanson, whose party currently has one seat in the Queensland Parliament, has pledged to scrap the Cross River Rail project if her party gains the balance of power in the upcoming election.
