Ban for Carlton bottle-thrower after incident at The Gabba
A Carlton Football Club member has been suspended for five years after throwing a bottle towards an umpire at the Gabba last Saturday night (15th August).
The incident, which involved a man sitting in the Carlton cheer squad, happened late in the fourth quarter of the Blues's 64-point loss to the Brisbane Lions.
After three days of investigation, the Melbourne club have come down hard on the offender, with sanctions that includes:
• A five-year suspension as a Carlton member (2016 to 2020) including not being able to sit in the cheer squad area on match day;
• His 2015 Carlton membership suspended for the rest of the season.
Carlton Chief Executive Steven Trigg described it as an unfortunate incident, telling AFL.com.au "we have been working really hard to create a family friendly environment within our cheer squad and it's unfortunate this isolated incident has affected the match day experience of those around him.
"Carlton will not stand for it and as it has breached our members' code of conduct we have imposed the appropriate sanction.
"We want our fans to come to games, support our team, and go home proud regardless of result."
