Awards honour the best Australian events

Awards honour the best Australian events
November 18, 2015

The 2015 Australian Event Awards have been presented, recognising the best events and achievements across the national industry.

Sydney’s ANZ Stadium was a multiple winner on the night, taking home awards in three categories, including, in partnership with Destination NSW, the Best Sporting Event for the Chelsea FC v Sydney FC football friendly in June while Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to veterans of the industry, Ron Walker AC CBE and Meri Took.

Held at Doltone House Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney last night (Tuesday 17th November), the night was hosted by Catriona Rowntree from Saxton Speakers Bureau and featured an entertainment showcase by SMA Productions, including their new act Swoon, who put a swing twist into some classic songs.

Winners in the Achievement categories highlighted Australia’s reputation on the world stage, with work on a number of international events, including the first European Games, taking home Event Awards trophies.

South Australia was declared Australia’s best region for events for the first time, claiming the 2015 State or Territory Award. South Australian winners included WOMADelaide, which won EVENTelec Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event, and Adelaide Writers’ Week, winner of Coates Hire Best Community Event. A further seven Best Event finalists took place in South Australia.

In the other eight Best Event categories, wins were spread across the country, with Western Australia taking home Best Charity or Cause-Related Event for Hawaiian Ride for Youth 2015, which raises funds and awareness for youth mental illness, and Best Regional Event for the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster, a 10 day festival in the East Kimberley region in the far north of the state. The judges were particularly impressed by the challenging logistics, the event’s diversity and the integration of the community in the delivery of the Muster.

Victorian winners were Creative Innovation Asia Pacific 2015, a conference staged by Creative Universe and Tania de Jong AM, which took home Doltone House Best Corporate Event, and Glow Winter Arts Festival from the City of Stonnington in Melbourne which won Best New Event.

The Gold Coast International Marine Expo was a winner for Queensland in the Best Exhibition category.

Meanwhile ANZ Stadium, in partnership with Destination NSW, took home Best Sporting Event for the Chelsea FC v Sydney FC International Football Friendly played in Sydney in June and Destination NSW won Best Tourism Event for the “creatively stunning, strategically important” Vivid Sydney 2015 which attracted a record 1.7 million people in 2015.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Parks Congress 2014 nabbed the award for CIM Magazine Best Meeting or Conference for New South Wales.

The Achievement category winners featured both Australian work and international achievements, with Technick winning Best Technical Achievement or Innovation for their work on the Baku 2015 European Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, while David Atkins Enterprises took home Best Achievement in Entertainment for their work on the ceremonies and competition concert series at the 2015 Men’s Handball World Championships in Qatar.

The ANZ Stadium/Destination NSW partnership proved successful again in the Best Achievement in Marketing, Communication or Sponsorship category which they won for their work on the Tottenham Hotspur FC football friendly against Sydney FC.

Luna Park Sydney won Best Achievement in Venue Management and Sydney TAFE took home the trophy for Best Education or Training Program.

Blanco Food and Events won Best Product or Service for their work on Black Tie Barefoot BBQ.

In the individual categories, Monique O’Callaghan nabbed Young Achiever of the Year after an impressive 12 months at Event Planet, managing 15 events involving over 140,000 people and winning five new clients for the agency. Dani Potter won Event Manager of the Year, for her work with Surf Life Saving Australia, where she initiated a new event format which improved the spectator experience.

With their work on the 10th Anniversary of the Prix de Marie Claire Fashion and Beauty Awards “clearly pushing boundaries on a number of levels” according to the judges, boutique agency Kat and Co took home both Best Achievement in Look, Design or Theming and Event Management Company of the Year.

The judges praised the company’s “excellent artistic edge”, “wide range of styles” and their impressive client focus.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to veterans of the industry, Ron Walker AC CBE and Meri Took.

Ron was recognised for his extensive work in the industry, including at the helm of the Melbourne Major Events Company and as Chairman of both the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

Meri’s career-long contribution to staging Australian events, particularly as founder and director of leading supplier Staging Rentals and Construction received due praise.

With voting closing at 9pm, Tottenham Hotspur FC International Football Tour was proclaimed Australia’s Favourite Event at the end of the night. For the first time in 2015, the judges selected the nominees for Australia’s Favourite Event, lending the traditional public vote critical weight.

Reflecting the philosophy behind the Event Awards, the night was staged by a veritable who’s who of the Australian events industry, with Event Awards partners supplying the stage, communications AV, lighting, live video streaming and everything in-between.

Event Awards Managing Director Ian Steigrad stated “quite simply, we couldn’t put on the great night that we do without our partners.

“We’re extremely grateful for their support.”
