Jellyfish exhibit unveiled as part of $6.5 million refurbishment at UnderWater World Mooloolaba

Jellyfish exhibit unveiled as part of $6.5 million refurbishment at UnderWater World Mooloolaba
December 28, 2013

The UnderWater World attraction on the Sunshine Coast has unveiled Australia's largest jellyfish exhibit as part of a $6.5 million, two year refurbishment that also sees the attraction join a global network of conservation-focused aquariums under the SEA LIFE banner.

Opened just prior to Christmas as UnderWater World SEA LIFE Mooloolaba, the attraction showcases five amazing new zones and new species, including the country's largest exhibit of sea jellies with hundreds of jelly fish from five different species on display in a colourful, interactive zone.

In keeping with the attraction's strong ethical and environmental values to 'Breed, Rescue and Protect', the attraction houses a wide range of common and rare jellyfish will help further educate the public on the ecological significance of jelly fish and the need for research and conservation.

James Thomas, Head of Queensland Attractions at Merlin Entertainments said the multimillion dollar refurbishment will position UnderWater World SEA LIFE on a global scale of aquariums.

Thomas explained "UnderWater World SEA LIFE today joins a family of 43 SEA LIFE aquariums throughout the world, owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments Group giving the Sunshine Coast attraction access to information, research and animal experts from SEA LIFE aquariums across Australia.

"Merlin's commitment is to ensure the long-term future of UnderWater World SEA LIFE and we believe we're entering a new era today and with the refurbishment, a major step forward for the 24 year old attraction. We now have the chance to share knowledge with other aquariums in the SEA LIFE network, join an extensive support system and continue the growth of our strong marine conservation program."

The relaunch is the attraction's biggest change in its 24 year history, as it becomes part of the SEA LIFE brand and embraces its strong ethical and environmental values.

A large portion of the attraction has been transformed into a new visitor walk way, taking in five new zones and showcasing superstars of the ocean including sea horses, bright coloured fluorescent corals, giant clams, leaf scorpion fish and razor fish.

UnderWater World SEA LIFE Curator of Fishes Kate Willson said the animal team is excited to showcase the new additions to locals and tourists and thrilled to educate the community about protecting a number of animals.

Willson added "we're all incredibly excited to continue to educate people about a wide variety of animals at UnderWater World SEA LIFE, especially the new Jellyfish Kingdom zone which is sure to be incredibly popular with such a large, extraordinary exhibit of sea jellies.

"Visitors to UnderWater World SEA LIFE will be able to discover hundreds of jellyfish from five different species including upside down jellies, moon jellies, comb jellies, blue blubbers and sea nettles.

"Over the coming months, we will welcome more jelly species and expand numbers of jelly fish as we continue to breed a range of species."

The Jellyfish Kingdom zone is a completely interactive area, with visitors able to discover how jellies move in the water, their colours and their many shapes.

The completion of the four month, $2.5 million second stage of refurbishment comes on the back of a $4 million refurbishment of the Ocean Tank and Walk Through and investment in water filtration systems in September 2012.

Spectacular new features unveiled as part of the first stage of revitalisation late last year include the new Ocean Tank and Walk Through with four new themed zones, a state of the art water filtrations system and the introduction of a more extensive marine conservation program.
