ATP says tennis in China is ready for take-off

Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) international group Chief Executive Brad Drewett has said that 'the sky is the limit' for the potential of tennis in China, as he launched the country's first Challenger Tour event in Beijing.

The 150-plus Challenger events around the world give tennis players with potential the chance to earn enough ranking points to play on the main ATP Tour.

"China is an incredible opportunity and the ATP has been well-established here for a long time," Drewett said in an interview before the launch ceremony, as reported by Reuters.

"The popularity of tennis year has grown exponentially here over the past five to 10 years.

"That growth will continue but the important thing about this program is to have young players coming through who will hopefully be playing on the final weekend in either the China Open or the Shanghai Masters.

"If that happens, I really think the sky's the limit."
