Ashmore’s World Gym still benefiting from The Rock’s visit
More than a year after global fitness icon ‘Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson visited the World Gym at Ashmore on the Gold Coast, the club continues to enjoy a welcome spike in memberships
The American actor and semi-retired professional wrestler publicly worked out at the local gym during his time on the Gold Coast shooting the disaster film San Andreas in April 2014.
Gym memberships quickly spiked when word got out that the Hollywood star was using the gym, and more than 12 months on a record 1,900 members are registered at Ashmore.
More than 2,200 members have also signed up to the new Burleigh World Gym since opening in October which features a 4 metre high mural of Johnson.
World Gym Australia owner Jonathan Davie said gym membership purchases were still holding at a steady rate of increase rate since his visit.
Davie told the Gold Coast Bulletin “we saw maybe a 20% increase when the Rock came and it is steady at about that rate.”
Johnson continues to post images of his time in the local gym on his social media which Davie says is offers ongoing exposure, adding “the great thing is I don’t think you can really buy that exposure.”
The gym is currently completing a 400 metre² extension while the Gold Coast is not the only region of Australia where gym owners honour The Rock.
Illawarra gym Aventus Health and Fitness has a giant mural of both Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger on its wall.
