Arts Market set to launch New Zealand performing arts worldwide
The best of New Zealand’s performing arts offerings will be further promoted on the international stage when the sector gathers to see a meticulously curated selection of Aotearoa’s top shows during 2019 Performing Arts Network of New Zealand (PANNZ) Arts Market, running from 5th to 7th March next year in Auckland.
The event will see artists, producers, presenters and industry leaders from New Zealand and international presenters from venues and festivals around the world, gather to view a carefully crafted programme of shows. Delegates from China, the UK, Canada and Australia have already shown interest in the market that is set to present New Zealand’s finest performing arts talent. The programme includes showcases from leading companies including Auckland Theatre Company, Zanetti Productions, SquareSums & Co, Trick of the Light, and The New Zealand Dance Company. Companies that will pitch shows include Barbarian Productions, White mess, and Nightsong.
Aside from show exhibitions, networking events will run alongside the programme of showcases and pitches. This creates a unique environment where partnerships within the performing arts community can be developed and strengthened, helping raise the creative bar by paving the way for touring of high-quality New Zealand work. The Arts Market is also timed to coincide with the Auckland Arts Festival, Auckland Fringe Festival and New Zealand Fringe in Wellington, meaning it will take place right at the time when the country is already abuzz with creative festivities.
This year, the market has undergone a revamp with only the highest calibre shows set to be on display. After gathering feedback, attending international markets and consulting with the industry, PANNZ decided to carefully curate the programme so that fewer pitches will be presented to allow for more in-depth engagement. Creative New Zealand have increased funding for the 2019 event to allow for five full-length showcases, programmed specifically with a focus for international presentation of these works. A focus on inviting more international presenters aims to fortify overseas ties and provide greater exposure of New Zealand shows beyond our shores.
2019 also marks a renewed commitment to developing a genuine sharing of power, cultural confidence and increased understanding amongst Maori and non-Maori arts practitioners from within the organisation. Kura Te Waati joins the team as Kaiārahi Tikanga Māori, a new role for the 2019 Arts Market, where she will be vital in supporting PANNZ in the development of cultural competencies, and weaving Tikanga Maori into the vision, mission and ultimately the delivery of the PANNZ Arts Market.
