With support and funding from the NSW Government, the Aquatic and Recreation Institute's new Active Ageing initiative is to be piloted at 13 aquatic and recreation facilities in NSW.

Aiming to develop and maintain aqua-fitness and gentle exercise classes specifically for over 50s, the ARI wants the program to acknowledge the importance of encouraging older people to engage in regular physical activity in the interests of maintaining their physical and mental health.

The ARI Active Ageing initiative will also see classes have a focus on improving the strength and balance of participants, with clear evidence that improvements in these areas can help prevent falls in people aged over 50.

Falls are a major issue in the ageing population, with one in four people over 65 hospitalised as a result of a fall.

The initiative will help to place aquatic and recreation facilities at the forefront of efforts to increase the overall health and wellbeing of the Australian population.
