Architects appointed for Brisbane Live cultural precinct
International architecture and design practice The NRA Collaborative (nra-co-lab) have announced their appointment by AEG Ogden to help develop the design for the Brisbane Live entertainment precinct.
The Brisbane-based venue manager plans a new $2 billion leisure precinct above and around the city’s Roma Street rail years that would include cinemas, restaurants, commercial buildings, hotels, residences, a retail zone and 12 hectares of parkland.
At the heart of the design is a 17,000-seat arena able to host a multitude of events from music to indoor sports.
The western edges of the precinct would also host three future cultural facilities “inspired by organic shapes and fluidity”, which NRA says would be used to house theatres and museums.
In a statement, NRA explained “Brisbane Live delivers a culturally rich addition to Brisbane creating entertainment and recreation for the public whilst enhancing the subtropical vision for Brisbane city.
“It is a truly connected and socially responsive project revitalising an underutilised space within the city’s Central Business District.”
Similar to Madison Square Garden in New York City, or Melbourne’s Federation Square, the new precinct complex would make use of valuable air space above existing rail lines as well as the connectivity that Roma Street has to every rail line in the SEQ rail network with no land swap or sale required.
The project would also benefit from two proposed mass transit projects, the Queensland Government’s Cross River Rail and the Brisbane City Council’s Brisbane Metro proposal, both with stations at Roma Street and have the ability to transport thousands of spectators in and out of the precinct within just minutes.
At the centrepiece of the Brisbane Live plan which is based on AEG’s LA Live complex is a new 17,000 seat world class arena which will showcase international superstar concerts and performances as well as world sporting events.
AEG Ogden’s plan is currently being assessed by the Queensland Government, although Deputy Premier Jackie Trad has said said the Government would not pay for it and the project would have to be funded by the private sector.
She explained "a market-led proposal is based on the premise that proponent - the person who puts in the project - to fund it.”
