read moreIn advance of South Australia hosting the AFL Draft, new figures show that the code’s move from the former AAMI Stadium to the redeveloped Adelaide Oval since 2014 has given a huge boost to the city’s tourism industry.
Recently released figures from STR Global Hotel Accommodation show that since the move, demand for hotel accommodation in Adelaide has increased by 23.8% and revenue by 30.2%.
The data shows that AFL fixtures at the Adelaide Oval has generated significant increases in revenue with the 2015 season resulting in a 5.4% increase in hotel revenue compared to the previous season. Room nights also grew by 5.5%.
Commenting on the figures, South Australian Tourism Minister Leon Bignell stated “the latest figures ... show the State Government’s investment in revamping the Oval was right on the money.
“This week we will see even more activity in the Riverbank Precinct. For the first time in almost 20 years, the 2015 NAB AFL Draft will be held in Adelaide.
“Along with the players vying for selection, about 350 AFL officials and executives, coaches, draftees and AFL media, will be at the Convention Centre.
“The redeveloped Adelaide Oval has changed our city and more city venues are now taking advantage of the increased crowds both before and after the game.
“These latest hotel figures along with Adelaide hosting the Draft, further cements Adelaide Oval’s reputation as one of the best stadiums in the country.”
In its 2015/16 Budget, the South Australian Government committed an additional $35 million to market South Australia nationally and internationally and to attract major events and conferences.
Minister Bignell concluded “the visitor economy is worth $5.4 billion to our state and tourism employs 32,000 people.
“Our goal is for it to reach $8 billion by 2020 and to create an extra 9,000 jobs.”
The NAB AFL Draft is being held at the Adelaide Convention Centre tomorrow evening - 24th November.
