South Australia's Stadium Management Authority (SMA) is currently in final negotiations with Baulderstone and other relevant companies over the final construction contract and project costs. The overall cost of the development has estimated at $450 million within which construction is likely to cost around $200 million.
Work is expected to begin in March 2012, after the coming cricket season, with a commitment to have AFL played at the ground in time for the 2014 season-opener. The stadium will be cricket and AFL venue with further application to enable multi-purpose use.
Baulderstone was acquired by Lend Lease in March this year when German giant Bilfinger Berger sold its Australian assets managed by Valemus for about $960 million. Valemus also held Abigroup and Conneq.
Cox Architecture was appointed earlier this year to design the stadium redevelopment, with Cox having collaborated on the venue's recently completed Western Stand with the HASSELL group.
Cox's Project Director Alastair Richardson says technology will be a major component in the new stadium, stating "one of the most exciting and innovative developments with the redevelopment will be the ability for technology to brand the stadium between the different home teams through lighting design and LED screens, which will create lighting overlays to help provide a strong home team advantage, whether it be the Crows, the Redbacks or Cricket Australia who are using the stadium."
Once complete, the 50,000-seat stadium will provide new lounges, internal streets, cafes and bars. The upgraded stadium will be connected to the city via a pedestrian bridge, with a new public plaza catering for large events.
Located in Adelaide's parklands between the city centre and North Adelaide, Adelaide Oval currently has a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators.
Its maximum crowd at a cricket game was 50,962 during the 1932 Ashes series while its biggest ever crowd was 62,543 at the 1965 SANFL grand final between Port Adelaide and Sturt.
At this stage the SMA has not secured a naming rights sponsor for the stadium.
