Adelaide adds vibrancy to its streets with creative lighting

Adelaide adds vibrancy to its streets with creative lighting
January 31, 2020

New creative lighting in Adelaide’s Moonta Street, at the core of Chinatown, is aimed to enhance and stimulate retail and shopfront investment. The South Australian Government has contributed $500,000 towards the City of Adelaide’s Moonta Street Reinvigoration project with the creative lighting forming an important part of the project.

The State Government investment has supported the delivery of northern and southern gateway ‘beacons’, mural art, modern functional lighting throughout the street and a creative lighting ‘Central Wave’. ‘Exploding waves’ extensions of creative lighting in the north and south will also be added to the street shortly.

Local artist Vans the Omega has created mural art with day and night representations that draws inspiration from Chinese culture, food and the Adelaide Central Market.

Member for Adelaide Rachel Sanderson said the State Government’s $500,000 commitment was “revitalising and rejuvenating” the famed destination.

Minister Sanderson advised “The City of Adelaide boasts a cultural melting pot of South Australians and international visitors and the Moonta Street upgrade is adding vibrancy, fun and safety to this well-known corner of our CBD.

“As local member, this upgrade is fantastic news for our local traders and will help bring more people into the street and surrounding area.”

Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said Council was committed to delivering ‘beautiful, surprising places’ throughout the city and that the new lighting and artwork does exactly that in Moonta Street.

Lord Mayor Verschoor added “beyond looking spectacular, additional lighting helps make the area even safer at night and that is good news for traders and everyone who visits.”
