ACT Government invites input on outdoor gym design
With three new outdoor fitness stations planned for locations across Canberra, the ACT Government is inviting community input on the type of equipment to be installed.
Explaining the consultation, ACT Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury stated “fitness stations will be installed at Tuggeranong Town Park, John Knight Memorial Park in Belconnen and Theodore Neighbourhood Oval to provide for those with an active lifestyle and encourage others to get active as part of their daily routines.
"The fitness stations will cater for various fitness levels and will include cardio and circuit equipment such as bikes, as well as strength based machines such as a leg press or chin up bars.
"We are also seeking feedback on the specific locations proposed for each of the fitness station sites at the three locations. Two sites are proposed for John Knight Memorial Park and Theodore Neighbourhood Oval, and three sites are proposed for Tuggeranong Town Park in accordance with the Tuggeranong Town Park master plan.
"The Tuggeranong Town Park and John Knight Memorial Park fitness stations will also be convenient for those who exercise around the lakes, allowing them to complete a full body workout without the need for a home gym or a gym membership and in an open air environment.
"The installation of a fitness station at Theodore Neighbourhood Oval will be a trial to gauge community use of fitness equipment at a neighbourhood oval. This will help guide any future decisions on the installation of fitness stations."
Minister Rattenbury said these new fitness facilities will expand the ACT Government's network of fitness equipment, with over 20 Canberra suburbs featuring fitness equipment such as sit up benches, chinup bars and balance beams at local parks and open spaces.
He concluded "the ACT Government is committed to supporting a healthy, active and productive community as part of the Healthy Weight Action Plan.
“The new fitness stations will not only help Canberrans find their 30 minutes of physical activity each day, but will also contribute towards social inclusion and community building.
"The ACT Government has invested $100,000 in the project, with the fitness stations to be completed by mid 2015.”
