15th FINA World Championships make use of Neptune-Benson’s Defender aquatic filtration systems
In preparation for the just completed 15th FINA World Swimming Championships (held from 20th July to 4th August in Barcelona Spain), Neptune-Benson replaced 18 conventional sand filters with just two Defender Regenerative Media Filters at the aquatic venues.
The initiative substantially reducing the event's environmental impact, reducing water consumption, energy and chemical consumption by more than half.
Home to the gymnastics, handball and volleyball competitions of the 1992 Summer Olympics, Barcelona's 16,000 seat Palau Sant Jordi indoor sporting arena was the host venue for the World Championships.
At the venue, Neptune-Benson Defender® Filters were paired with two Myrtha pools; a 50 x 25 x 3 metre competition pool and a 50 x 20 x 2 metre training pool with the combined flow rate for these pools measuring 1,408 metre3/hour or 6,199 GPM.
Myrtha's stainless steel, panel-constructed pools were not only an ideal solution for this type of temporary installation; but they have also set the standard as the world's fastest pools, making Defender® the perfect complement as the world's finest aquatic filter.
The two companies have teamed up on several occasions in this fashion, converting large capacity indoor arenas into the temporary center of the aquatics universe.
The event's diving competitions were held at the Piscina de Montjuïc and waterpolo at the neighbouring Piscines Bernat Picornell; both of which utilised a combination of Myrtha and Defender systems.
The outdoor Piscina de Montjuïc diving complex gained fame during the 1992 Barcelona games, offering spectacular views of the city's skyline as a backdrop to the event.
For the recent World Championships, the new installation was a retrofit of conventional sand filters.
Requiring just 25% of the mechanical space normally required for a traditional sand filter installation, the two Defender® filters took the place of 18 sand filters with the space efficient design allowing Myrtha's engineers to take advantage of room below deck to house the filters instead of adding the expense to create a separate mechanical room. This is important as these two pools are a permanent installation.
Commenting on the involvement in the World Championships, Neptune-Benson Chief Executive Barry Gertz stated "we were honoured to have been selected to provide the filters for this premier aquatic event.
"Since the Defender filter removes particulate as small as 1 micron, this is the cleanest, healthiest and fastest competition water available anywhere."
Defender provides a number of environmental and economic benefits as well, reducing water consumption by 90% and energy and chemical consumption by 50% and 30% respectively.
Neptune-Benson, a leading manufacturer of commercial pool filtration systems; ETS-UV disinfection systems; and Lawson Aquatics components, were proud suppliers of the 2013 FINA World Aquatics Championships.
The event featured six aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, high diving, open water, and synchronised swimming. The event venues were previously used for the 2003 World Aquatics Championships.
